Figure 3 shows the compression and expansion times The fastest compression time was achieved using our algorithm (which we call "SmallTime"). Aladdin Systems’ "StuffIt" produced almost equal file sizes, but required the longest compression and expansion times, by far. Based on expansion and compression times, the best unix program was "compress", but the efficiency was very poor; the files were only reduced in size by 29.4%.
